To say this played a havoc with my body’s internal clock when I started working full time would be mild.  Knowing myself, my morning routine involved me stumbling out of bed, getting dressed half awake and using caffeine in it’s many forms as a prop. I could go all Buford Bubba from Forrest Gump with his shrimp recitation and wax poetic about coffee (the stronger the better), Red bull, Pepsi and my many other caffeine fixes but I won’t. To say I was addicted to caffeine would be an understatement, working full-time while pursuing a Master’s part-time did not help, I was lucky if I got 5 hours of sleep on any given night. My life existed like this for the 28 months it took to complete my degree.

After all that I realized 2 things, 1) my body was now used to running on limited sleep and 2) my addiction to caffeine had finally caught up with me. I had noticed that sometimes in the morning my heart would race like hell after doing nothing more laborious than moving my mouse and when this happened I had difficulty breathing. Despite having health insurance at the time I never went to the doctor (don’t like them!), besides the symptoms usually disappeared within a few minutes. I didn’t really connect the dots until a coworker pointed out my fidgeting. My leg would shake constantly and I was always jittery, since all of this was occurring on a subconscious level until it was pointed, I don’t know how long it had been going on. Needless to say I weaned myself off of caffeine in all it’s forms. I will have a Pepsi occasionally but that was always mild in side effects (I think the sugar rush does more for me than anything else).

After my love affair with caffeine ended, most persons knew not to approach me before 10am (after 11 was perfect but I had a boss so that was pushing it) my brain was not fully awake till then. I would salivate at the smell of coffee and I would’ve killed for a Red-Bull but I resisted temptation. Which brings me finally to the point of my post my Insomnia, I knew I had a point when I started but it seems I’ve digressed along the way and have almost forgotten how most things before tie into my point. But I say fuck it, I haven’t slept in almost 24 hours I’m allowed to ramble.

Here’s a question; Is it Insomnia if you stay awake until you drop from exhaustion and then sleep for only 2 to 3 hours all the time?
